It’s important to recognize some common issues with both mini split and heat pump units, surprisingly often our heat pump technicians arrive to a service call only to find the solution could have been solved by the home or business owner.

  1. Before you call for heat pump service check your thermostat settings, making sure at least one zone is set to on and the desired temperature is set well below ambient or well above ambient for heating, if batteries need replacing do so.

  2. Power Supply - Check your indoor emergency system switch to ensure it is on. This is typically a toggle switch that may have a red cover plate

    1. Check your circuit breaker to make sure that you have not had a nuisance trip and your heat pump system does have power

    2. Check the outdoor disconnect to make sure it is on.

  3. Heat Pumps Operations

    1. In Heat Mode, Is Defrost On? If you are operating in the heat mode, make sure that your system is not in “Defrost” mode. If it is "defrost" should complete within a few minutes and heating operations should then resume.

    2. Consider the Time Delay: If your breaker was off, after turning the power on, give it a few minutes: many systems have a built-in time delay.

  4. Check System Airflow

    1. Check your indoor unit filters. If your filters have not been changed lately, change them now.

    2. Make sure that the grills / registers in your duct system are open and free of obstructions.

    3. Check your outdoor unit coils. Is it obstructed with leaves or debris? If so, clean the coil if you can do so without damaging the outdoor coil. You might need our help on this one.

  • For a ductless unit check the following -

  • 1. Start with the controls

    • If you are using hand held remotes, check the battery, and replace them now.

  • 2. Make sure that at least one zone is set to "ON" and the desired temperature is set well below ambient for cooling operation, or well above ambient for heating.

  • 3. If you are operating in the heat mode, make sure that your system is not in “Defrost” mode. If it is, wait a few minutes for your system to complete its defrost cycle.

    • Now check the power supply:

  • 4. Check your circuit breaker for your outdoor unit to ensure that you have not had a nuisance trip and your heat pump system does have power.

  • 5. Check the outdoor disconnect typically mounted next to your outdoor unit to ensure that it is "ON".

  • 6. If your breaker or disconnect was off, after turning the power on, give it a few minutes: many systems have a built-in time delay.

    • *If your system is on, but not heating or cooling properly:

  • 7. Check your indoor unit filters. If your filters have not been cleaned lately, clean them now.

After checking these items, if your central heat pump system or ductless mini split unit is still not running properly call us and we’ll dispatch a professional service tech to help!
